The twenty-minute walk that outworks the gym
The most evidence-backed exercise machine ever built has two settings, costs nothing, and is already attached to you. Walking is not the beginner version of real exercise. For most of the health outcomes that matter, it is real exercise.
What twenty minutes buys
A brisk daily walk drops cardiovascular risk measurably, steadies blood sugar for hours afterwards, lifts mood on par with mild antidepressants in several trials, and preserves the leg strength that decides how independently we age. The dose–response curve is steepest at the bottom: going from nothing to twenty minutes buys more than going from sixty to eighty.
Brisk, defined kindly
You should be able to talk, but not sing. That is the whole test. If you can deliver a monologue, add pace; if you cannot finish a sentence, ease off.
Making it automatic
Anchor it to something that already happens: after lunch, after school drop-off, the first phone call of the day taken on foot. Habits stick to existing rhythms far better than to resolutions. Rain is not a counter-argument; it is a jacket decision.
When knees complain
Start shorter and flatter, not slower forever — joints adapt when the dose rises gently. Pain that swells a joint or lasts into the next day deserves a look; the fix is almost never ‘stop walking’, and almost always ‘walk differently for a while’.
We write many prescriptions in this clinic. The one with the fewest side effects and the longest evidence trail fits in any shoe.
