Every autumn the same two questions arrive: does the flu shot work, and will it make me ill? Short answers: yes, usefully; and no, it cannot. Here is the grown-up version, without the shouting from either side.<\/p>\n

What the flu vaccine actually does<\/h3>\n

It cuts your chance of catching influenza roughly in half in a typical season \u2014 and, more importantly, it stacks the odds heavily against the severe course: the pneumonia, the hospital stay, the week that becomes a month. Vaccination is less about never sniffling and more about capping the downside.<\/p>\n

Why it cannot give you flu<\/h3>\n

The injected vaccine contains no live virus \u2014 nothing in it can replicate. A sore arm and a day of feeling ‘off’ are your immune system rehearsing, which is precisely the product working. The colds people catch in vaccine week were incubating anyway; October is a busy month for viruses.<\/p>\n

Who benefits most<\/h3>\n

Everyone over 65, anyone pregnant, and anyone with heart, lung, kidney or immune conditions \u2014 plus the people who live with them. Protecting yourself is also how you protect the person at your dinner table who cannot afford the severe course.<\/p>\n

The rest of the adult card<\/h3>\n

Tetanus every ten years. A one-time pneumonia vaccine conversation after 65. Shingles vaccination from 50 \u2014 anyone who has watched shingles up close does not need persuading. And keeping COVID boosters per current guidance, especially in the benefits-most groups above.<\/p>\n
