Fair enough: fevers end. Screens do not. Here is the calm version of what pediatrics actually knows.

Screens are not poison, and guilt is not a plan. The two things that matter most are what screens replace — sleep, movement, face-to-face play — and whether an adult is nearby in the early years, turning watching into talking.

The forty-minute rule

Young eyes and attention do better in bounded doses. A useful family rhythm: after roughly forty minutes of any seated screen time, a few minutes of something physical — water, a stretch, a walk to the window. Not as punishment; as punctuation. Eyes need distance focus, bodies need gravity, and attention resets better than it stretches.

What we suggest by age

Under 2: video calls with family aside, screens have little to offer that a floor and a face do not offer better.
2–5: up to an hour a day of good content, ideally watched together.
School age: agree the boundaries around the non-negotiables — sleep, homework, movement, meals — and let screens live in what is left, rather than the reverse.

The one non-negotiable

Screens out of the bedroom overnight — for children and, honestly, for parents. Sleep loses every fight it is forced to have with a glowing rectangle.

If focus, mood or sleep have visibly changed, come in and let us look at the whole picture together. It is almost never just the screen — and that is good news, because whole pictures have more handles to pull.

Parents ask us about screens more than about fevers.
